You don’t get many monkeys on the Isle of Wight, but one place you can be sure of monkeys and monkey experience days is Monkey Haven in Newport.
This park won Visit England’s ‘Small visitor attraction of the year’ in 2017 so they’re obviously doing something right.
Monkey Haven is a rescue centre and sanctuary for primates, and the park gives these monkeys and apes a new chance to live enriched, carefree lives. And you can see from the staff and the animals that everyone is happy to be here. The park runs two experience days – Keeper for the day and meet the marmosets experience – and as you can imagine, they’re monkey-tastic.
Keeper for the day
Work alongside an experienced keeper all day, preparing the food, cleaning the enclosures and hand feeding some of the primates. The day finishes at 3pm, giving you the chance to spend the rest of the day in the park. you get a nice free lunch too!
Here’s a list of the residents of the zoo – you’re not guaranteed to get close to them all, but you can be sure to get close to some of these furry rascals:
- Black and White Colobus
- Black and White Ruffed Lemurs
- Squirrel Monkeys
Meet the marmosets
This is a 20 minute encounter where you are allowed inside the marmoset enclosure. You’ll be holding a bowl of marmoset food too, so they’ll be bouncing and squeaking all over you. Minimum age is 16 but this is a nice way to get close to monkeys if the zoo is accessible to you.
If you know someone who loves monkeys, and who is local to the Isle of Wight, then we’d happily recommend these experiences.
